About

Early Organization History

  • In 1967 the Center for Continuing Education at Northeastern began publishing Volunteer Administration, a quarterly journal devoted to the promotion of research, theory, and creative programming of volunteer services. This journal continued until the early 1980’s.  Many issues of this early professional periodical can be accessed at  http://ellisarchive.org/journals-with-articles-va
  • This first journal was succeeded by The Journal of Volunteer Administration, published by the Association for Volunteer Administration (AVA) between 1982-2005 as the primary source of applied research relevant to volunteer management.  A full list of issues and articles can be viewed accessed at http://ellisarchive.org/journals-with-articles-ava
  • In 2006, this journal transitioned to a new name, home base, and format.  Now titled the International Journal of Volunteer Administration (The IJOVA), it is a professional peer reviewed publication of the Department of Agricultural and Human Sciences at North Carolina State University in Raleigh.  Published only in digital formats, IJOVA is offered in recognition of the critical role of professional managers of volunteers in mobilizing human resources to address serious human, community, and social needs through volunteerism.

Refreshing IJOVA

Editorial board in 2015 sets an aggressive agenda to reconsider the journal and took the following steps:

  • Engaged consulting firm to develop new website and implement a subscription management system.
  • Made the decision to move away from publishing two or three issues to publishing manuscripts as they are reviewed and approved.
  • Reconstituted the board to grow membership and move to the next phase of leadership.
